Manu Chandaria: Excellence – Made in Kenya
May 15, 2008 by Sikiliza
Dr. Manu Chandaria is a year short of celebrating his 80th birthday. If we are to work with stereotypical behaviour, we would expect that by now he would have taken a back seat from his vast business and philanthropy interests. Yet, his pace has yet to slacken, and he puts in as much time he did in the mid 50’s when he came back from USA after studying a Masters in Engineering and taking up the family business mantle.
He is the Chairman of the Chandaria Group of Companies, a family concern that is also a huge empire operating in over 43 countries worldwide. He is also the Chairman of The Chandaria Foundation started in 1952 by his family which focuses on helping the less fortunate in the community.
His early years were spent at his father’s provisional store along Nairobi’s famous Biashara Street, he lived briefly in Mombasa and then in a one-roomed house in Ngara during pre-independence Kenya. In those days Muthaiga, an affluent Nairobi suburb, was still an exclusively European affair flagged by a huge forbidding signpost that read “Trespassers will be Prosecuted.” Lolling around on the beaches of Nyali was also reserved for the Europeans only. If Asians or Africans wanted to take a dip they had to take a boat into the sea and get off at the reef and swim in the open seas of the Indian Ocean. Therefore, it was ironic sitting in his lounge in his home in the Muthaiga suburb where less than half a century ago none of us would have been allowed into the area at all, or worse still allowed to fraternize.
The Muthaiga sign came down after 1955 when he had already married his wife Aruna Chandaria mother of his three children and his best friend. This is by far one of the most obvious fruits of independence that Kenya reaped, our ability to thrive on diversity.
But what is Dr. Chandaria’s key to success?
“At an early age I realized I would never be great at sports, so I made up for it in my studies,” he said.
His father had moved to Kenya in 1916 as a merchant with a provisions store along Biashara Street. They also delved into the manufacturing business by buying into an aluminium plant called KaluWorks. His parents made a lot of sacrifices to educate them well and Dr Manu, with some of his family members took over the running of Kalu Works once they finished their education. At first they were overwhelmed at the level of work required to run a successful business enterprise. However, they also felt a strong sense of responsibility and recognized the struggles that had to be endured first by their parents to acquire the plant and then by the children to make it a success.
Strapped with this determination, they woke early everyday and opened the doors for the plant workers by 7.30am. As management, they put in 16 to18-hour days and within 5 years the business grew from 40 employees to over 800 employees. In time they amassed a collection of other plants around the world; and by 1980 the business expanded to almost all continents.
Even today, nearly 30 years later, Manu still puts in 16-hour days at work.
He attributes much of their success to the exposure that he acquired while studying abroad which opened his mind to new ideas. He is also influenced by his strong religious upbringing in the Jain doctrines that are principled on a pious and moderate lifestyle. He has never had the need for ostentation or excesses.
Another side of Dr. Chandaria is his work in the community. He has always seen the need to give opportunity to Kenyan youth so that they can have the chance to live to their full potential. He is involved with several charity organizations and works with them to raise the quality of life; a feat that he feels all Kenyans with means should be involved in. Dr. Chandaria was on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s honour list in 2003 and in 2006 he was granted Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition for his work in the community and his promotion of Kenyan – British economic interest in Kenya.
He also feels that the corporate world has a duty for giving back to the community.
“We need to realize, as the private sector, that we have the responsibility to accept making money and looking after ourselves but in addition we need to also care for the community and our country Kenya at large.”
With this in mind, it is not surprisingly to see him busy involved with projects ranging from rehabilitation of street families, to educational trusts that expand opportunities for the less fortunate in Kenya.
“The real key to success for the youth in Kenya is to open their minds to good ideas that can have a multiplier effect,” he explains
“Zero multiplied by zero will always be zero. You can’t get something out of nothing. We need to expand our ideas – two multiplied by two is four and four multiplied by four is sixteen and so on. That is the true secret to success!” says Dr. Chandaria.
According to him, the government, the corporate world and individuals need to learn to harness the potential of the youth in Kenya by equipping them with skills that will help build them as strong capable citizens, and allowing them to use these tools to help secure the future of our beloved nation.
His message to the youth of Kenya is to learn to set themselves free from the web of dependency. Grants or aid is only provided to sow the seed of our ambitions then we need to begin to think of ways to attain financial independence with hard work and winning ideas.
And his vision for Kenya?
“Among all our neighbours in East and Central Africa, Kenya is still a notch higher even without any real natural wealth. Our main asset is human resources, intelligence and goodness of heart. We Kenyans are the true source of wealth in this region. We just need to realize this and then we can make it.”

A very admirable man and inspiration to all Kenyans

YOUR OLD Just kidding! I think your cool
The more we allow our minds to be exposed to new (winning) ideas, the more determined we are to suceed; the more we guarantee our succes.
As Kenyans we should rise up to the occassion, we must focus on and go for the goal
Sir,
I admire you for your business abilities and philanthrophic activities but I need to tell you some hard truths about your businesses as it seems everyone is busy just praising you.
I have been to some of your industries installing equipment and I also have kenyan friends(both kenyan asians and Africans) who have had the misfortune of working at your companies. I observed that the top managemment and middle management is filled with expatriates. I am not a xenophobic. I believe kenya needs the skills expatriates bring, but these skills ought to be used to train kenyans to take over. However, in your companies, there seems to be a mafia of expatriates who prevent any promotion of kenyans (kenyan asian and african). If you truly believe in developing kenya then set your business model right and break the expatriate mafia & start developing managerial and business skills of those kenyans working in your businesses and promote them based on their skills and potential. All my friends who have worked for you (kenyan engineers) have left in frustration. I pray you get to read this comment and hope you can get some of your magic working so that kenyans can proudly say ” I work for Galsheet or Insteel and they are proudly kenyan” . Right now I think though you have great acheivements under your belt that no doubt should be recognised, but I do not think you ought to be given the east african CEO of the year award as your companies are not truly kenyan or east african (except for the shareholders and junior level staff).

Dear Sir,
I must thankyou for your great effort in assisting all those in need for various aid. At your age,you tirelessly continue to do what many stop as they age.
I am seeking financial aid to enable me achieve my long desired educational needs and with that, comfortably emulate your example in helping others. I believe quality education is the ultimate solution to Kenya’s increasing youth dis -oeriented achievement endeavours. I have been working in a reputable organisation for the last 8 years in the hope to raise some funds to study a degree in Education. I am very happy to have been accepted by a local University for a degree in Education and Councelling and am determined to realise my dreams and reach out to many of our Kenyan children in taking a major role in their educational needs along with other aspects in regard to schooling.
It is with this that I humbly ask for assistance as my salary can’t even address to my needs in raising my 5 year old son as I try to save the little I can for his educational needs. Your assistance, very much needed, will be a benefit to the society through me, that I promise Kenyan children- future leaders.
Dr. Manu Chandaria,

I had heard of the Chandaria group of companies, during my working life in Uganda, in 1998-2000.
Later, I came to India, and continued working here. Today when I was going through the websites I came across your group name.
I worked in Uganda in Spencon, which is a flagship company of Mr. J.C. Patel, who rose from a teacher to a builder.
Some how I really enjoyed in working life in East Africa, and that too in Kampala. I am a B.Com,LLB, MMM(Masters in Marketing Management) with nearly 25 years of experience.
I would prefer to work in your organisations.
Presently I work as Senior General Manager, incharge of co-ordinating the activities od Logistics, Procurement, and Administration. The ultimate work is to enhance service levels to the end customer.
Where can I send my CV, for a screening in Chandaria group of companies?
I need the e-mail id for this purpose as well as the contact official who takes care of expat recruitments in your organisation.
Due Regards,
S.Sethunath
Dear Sir
I have admired you for all the unbelievable and extraordinary milestones achieved since the day I read and heard about you.
Having around 19 years of experience, throughout in plastics injection molding, I was working as Factory Manager in your licensee company in UAE, manufacturing hangers.
With heartfelt respects for your kind self I would like to state with humility that during my tenure there were remarkable productivity and quality improvements coupled with weight reduction, unsurpassed by other units.
Having quit my job due to personal reasons, I am out of job at the moment and based in Pondicherry, India.
I humbly state that my expertise in hanger moulding is amongst the best, can achieve unbelievable cycle times while working in tandem with design and tool people (especially with A & E hangers).
It’s my kind request to you for giving me an opportunity to work in your organization manufacturing hangers, at any location. Can only assure that the results will be much beyond the expectation of my job profile.
Best Regards

Hi Sir
We are seeking to find a donor who will fully or partially sponsor drilling of water within our school compound. This shall also include renovating the existing toilets, putting up two blocks of bathrooms with at least 10 (ten) cubicles fully fitted with shower taps.
The completion of this project should provide safe, sufficient and reliable water that will enable the pupils; especially the girls take bath in school. Hence reducing rate of absenteeism from school due to hygiene related reasons.
Besides this, the rate of diseases that come as a result of lack of water will be minimised. It will also save the school the cost of buying water from the vendors therefore redirecting the funds to some other expenditure.
The water will not only help the Tumaini Primary School alone but also the neighbouring schools like Kifaru Primary School which also happens to benefiting from the school feeding program. Kifaru Primary School is just across the road and is as well in dire need of reliable and sufficient water supply.
About the school
Tumaini Primary School was established by the City Council of Nairobi and commissioned about 20 years ago (1989). The main aim of establishing the school was to help improve the rate of enrolment in primary school in the area especially the girl child who then risked extinction due to distance, population and poverty.
The school sits on an approximate of 15 acre piece of land belonging to the Nairobi City Council on behalf of the public and is protected under the local authority and the central government act under the public property act.
At the time of its establishment, only a few girls managed to get admissions in the few and far apart schools available in the area. Since then the school has improved in both enrolment and performance with girls putting a competitive challenge to their male counterparts.
Tumaini Primary School is a multi religious school and caters for nearly all the 42 tribes existing currently in the country. We also have a reasonable number of foreign pupils most of whom for one reason or another had to seek refuge in the country. These are children drawn from neighbouring countries e.g. Somalia and Sudan.
Currently the school is enjoying a feeding program, thanks to the support from Feed the Children Initiative that support a number of slum schools in the city. Tumaini was considered among other schools in region like Dandora, Korogocho, Kibera, Huruma, etc. The organization provides the school with dried maize, beans, vegetable salad and peas while the parents contribute Kshs 200 to cater for the boiler. Additionally, the parents agreed to pay Shs 10 per child daily to cater for other expenses like the sauce pans, cooks’ wages and fire wood.

Dear friend,
I am requesting that you advertise our website to as many well wishers as possible.
The web site explain what we are doing for the disabled children.
I, Fr. Felix F. Kauta has dedicated my life to assist these special children. As I am writing to you, one is critically ill at Kiambu hospital with hydrocephalus condition.
Please!!!! help. you are able.
Hi. I must commend you for the good work you are doing for the needy.
I am a Bsc student at catholic university of E.A. doing my third year. I managed to get into this institution through a private sponsor who has been consistently paying my fee. However the sponsor is currently experiencing financial defficulties which has resulted into this semester`s fee unpaid. This has consequently denied me a chance to take my exams asthe university insists on the zero balance for one to do his or her exams. This is threatening my academics. Please help me for the remaining one and a half yrs to clear my course.
I have lodged my case with the deputy dean of students Mr Maina who knows my case.
It is my prayer that my pea is heard. Thank you. Simon.
First thanks for allowing me speak my mind.
The story of my life is a catalogue of endless struggle and suffering that usually goes with untimely demise of sole bread winner.
You have it within your ability to give hope and another chance to salvage even a little that remains of my dream through giving me this bursary.I’m a student in the university of Nairobi and i believe with your help a positive outcome is well within the realms of realization.
Dear sir,Thank you for the good work you are doing. We are humbled by your charitable works that knows no borders.Despite your foundation not sponsoring agricultural based projects, we would appreciate a visit or assistance to start a hydrophonics tomato farming project.our group is a home based care group for Hiv/Aids patients. This will go along way alleviating poverty levels , creating employment as well as conserving our environment. We remain optimistic that we will get a response from your noble office.

i admire your work Mr Chandaria you are a role model to many people. am 22 years old have a seven month old son whom ave named after you. he is so special to me that is the reason of naming him after you.
I have heard a lot about you and i always dream of being an enterprenuer like you.You are an inspiration.
Thank you for helping young people.
your a great person..iam seeing plenty of my brothers and sisters asking for assistance. Its my believe that they get your attention but please create a forum where they can plead for help more privately to you…its not fair that they have to get your attention through a place reserved for public viewing.iam a philanthropist also and was wondering how we could partner in assisting people in Taita/taveta region
May Dr. Manu live long to show that one can be industrious, wealthy and at the same time think about the poor. You know what, God makes people successful so that He can use them to reach to others’ who need help in society. Many are as successful and wealthy like Dr. Manu or even wealthier, but close their eyes to the poor. Does it really make sense to make all the money , only to leave it all after passing on? Thank you Daktari and keep on. I believe the other secret to your success is not because you work for long hours. It’s because your giving touches God,who in return multiplies the work of your hands.
Daktari indeed you have a big heart. Thanks for all that are doing for the poor children in Kenya. I work and i am committed to these children too. It’s so rewarding to see a child’s life transformed.
Thank you
My family and I are one of the large number of beneficiaries of Shriman Manu Chandaria,s Vision and Adminstrative abilities.
Can never forget the day he interviewed me at Ashoka Hotel, Bangalore in 1977, for a Profit Center Manager position in one of the Comcraft Group Companies in Tanzania.
Nor the day 1n 1979 he came to visit Galco Factory – walked straight into the Workers’ Toilet to see if it was maintained as clean as the rest of the factory. Very meticulous.
Exceptional Unity among family members, and a transparent appreciation and respect for all their staff is one of the main pillars of the group’s success. Before entering an expatriate manager’s room, there will be knock and “may i disturb you” ?
HATS OFF TO EVERY CHANDARIA FAMILY MEMBER !!!!!!!!!!!
